Student Support Services aims to increase the enrollment, retention, and graduation of low income and/or first generation college students from the University of Connecticut. Selected students spend the summer prior to matriculation taking academic classes to prepare them for the rigor of college coursework. Students study math and English and must achieve proficiency in all classes to demonstrate their strong commitment and readiness to the University before they are allowed to enroll in classes for the following fall semester. Each summer 45 – 50 recent graduates from high schools from the Greater Hartford area participate in the program and over 90 percent succeed and join an upper class group of about 60 – 70 students who completed the program in previous years.
