Our Vision

To educate students about the interaction of career and academic dynamics that enhance the Greater Hartford Campus experience.

Our Mission

The Advising and Exploration Center at the Greater Hartford Campus services undergraduate students studying in a variety of degree programs. The integration of the social, academic and career development of the student is the central focus and drive behind the center. We pledge to help students in the following ways:

  • Help students find their path through the educational process and beyond
  • Guide students through a process to help them identify and assess their skills, values, and interest
  • Empower students to be serious about their studies and responsible for their decisions and actions
  • Educate students on the rules and regulations of the university
  • Provide personalized academic advising to each student
  • Develop partnerships with students in the advisor/advisee role.

  • Who is My Advisor?
  • Before course registration for the upcoming semester begins, it is imperative that you meet with your academic advisor (or attend a group advising session) to go over the course selection process for the upcoming semester. Therefore, it is important to know who your advisor is in order to make an appointment with him/her. This information is located within your student admin website, click here for instructions on how to find your advisor.

  • If you have a Faculty Advisor
  • You are responsible for setting up an appointment regarding registration with your Faculty Advisor. You will not find most Greater Hartford Campus Faculty Advisors on ADVAPP. You need to contact them directly by phone or e-mail to set up your appointment. Contact information can be found at phonebook.uconn.edu

  • Make an appointment with Al Monti or Katie Ryan
  • You can make an appointment with Katie or Al through the ADVAPP calendar appointments system.


    Fall 2009 First Year Student Timeline

    August 25th :
    • Attend New Student Orientation
    August 27th :
    • Orientation for Parent’s of new students
    August 31th :
    • Fall Semester begins
    September 14th :
    • Last day for ADD/DROP. Courses dropped after this date will have a “W” for withdrawal recorded on the academic record.
    October 5th :
    • Advising begins for Spring 2010 registration. The advising period will run from Monday, October 5th through Wednesday, November 18th. You will receive an e-mail to your Huskymail Account on Monday, September 28th discussing Advising for Spring 2010.
    Mid-October:
    • Midterm Grade Reports will be distributed. Instructors of 1000 and 2000 –level courses notify the Registrar of students that appear to be in danger of earning D, F, U or N grades. The student is notified via Huskymail. For additional information see pg. 26 of the 2009-2010 catalog (catalog.uconn.edu)
    October 26th :
    • Registration for the Spring 2010 semester begins via the Student Administration System (www.studentadmin.uconn.edu). Seniors will be the first to register. First year students will not register until 3 weeks later. After your advising appointment you will then prepare to register for classes. You will have an Enrollment Appointment in the Student Administration System.
    November 2nd :
    • Last day to drop a course. You will need to fill out a Schedule Revision Request Card in order to drop a course. You can pick a card up at the main office of the undeyrgraduate building. You will need to see your advisor for a signature.

    • When dropping a course after the second week of the semester you will receive a “W” on your record.
    December 11th :
    • Last day of the semester
    December 14th - December 19th :
    • Final exams

    • Be sure to check the Final Exam Schedule (hartford.uconn.edu/finals). Your final exam may be given at a different time than when you meet for your class during the semester. You are responsible for knowing the times of your final exams.
    End of December

    Forms

    • Add/Drop Courses
    • If you are looking to add or drop a course after the first two weeks of classes, please fill out the Schedule Revision card [pdf]. The card must be signed by your advisor before submitting to the Greater Hartford Registrar. ***Remember, classes cannot be dropped without extenuating circumstances past the 9th week of the semester!

    • Change School, College or Major
    • If you are looking to change your School or College and/or major you will need to fill out the Program Change Form [pdf] and return it to your advisor.

    • Repeat Course for a Third Time
    • If you need to repeat a course for the third time, please return the completed copy of the Permission Form [pdf] to your advisor to start the process of acquiring appropriate signatures.

    • Freshmen English Waiver
    • If you have taken multiple English literature courses at another University and believe that you are eligible for a freshmen english waiver, follow the instruction on the Freshmen English Waiver Form [pdf].

     

    Each semester, student will meet with their individual academic advisors to review their course selection for the upcoming school semester. Peoplesoft is the comprehensive student administrative system used for all aspects of the course selection process. You can access Peoplesoft by going to www.studentadmin.uconn.edu and entering your Peoplesoft ID and password.

    • Group Advising Sessions
    • Every semester we conduct group advising sessions for specific majors at the University of Connecticut. Check out the Advising and Exploration Center website for more information on the dates and times of these events.

     

     

    Campus Change

    • Are you ready to campus change?
    • In order to assist you in the transition process to the Storrs campus, the University of Connecticut has developed a campus change website to provide you with the necessary resources to make your transition a successful one.

    • Attend a campus change meeting
    • In order for a student to officially change his/her campus from a regional campus to Storrs, he/she must first attend a Campus Change meeting to fill out the appropriate paperwork.

      • Pursue academic and co-curricular opportunities related to academic goals

    • When should I be meeting with my advisor?
    • Registration for the following semester typically begins 8 weeks into the current semester. It is best to make an appointment with your advisor before the registration process begins.

    • When do I register for courses?
    • Each semester, every student is given an enrollment appointment (the date which his/her registration begins) which is determined by total number of credits completed. These dates are listed on the student admin site.

    • How do I add/drop/swap courses after the 10th day of class?
    • You will need to fill out a student revision card if you are looking to make any changes to your schedule after the 10th day of classes. You will need to talk to your advisor and receive their signed permission before adjusting your schedule. You can download a schedule revision card at http://www.hartford.uconn.edu/aec/schrevision.pdf.

    • Can I drop a course at any time during the semester?
    • You can drop a course any time within the first two weeks of the semester by simply using the student admin system. If you want to drop a course after that, you will need to fill out a schedule revision card as outlined above; however, you cannot drop a course after the completion of the 9th week of classes without documented extenuating circumstances. Remember, dropping a class can impact your student status, so you will want to make sure you double check this before dropping classes.

    • What is the maximum number of credits I can register for?
    • 19 for students already admitted into Engineering, Pharmacy, and Fine Arts, 17 for everyone else.

    • Can I take more than the maximum number of credits?
    • You can apply for excess credit authorization once you have completed at least one semester of courses.

    • Why does my student admin account have a "hold"?
    • There are several different "holds" which you can have on your account: you can have an advising hold if you haven’t met with your advisor about the upcoming semester, you can have a bursar hold if you have failed to pay your bill, or you can have an immunization hold if you have not completed the appropriate immunization paperwork. In any instance, you will want to take action to lift your hold as soon as possible so it doesn’t prevent you from registering for classes on time.

    • How do I transfer Course Equivalencies from other Connecticut institutions?
    • There is a listing of courses from other Connecticut institutions and their direct UConn equivalencies on the following website: http://www.transfer.uconn.edu/search.php

    • How do I know which courses I still have to take in order to graduate?
    • The Student Admin system allows students to run a degree progress report to see which classes/requirements have and have not been completed.

    • If I want to switch my major, how do I know which courses will count toward my new major?
    • The Student Admin system allows students to run a What If report to see which classes/requirements have been completed toward a different major.
